Portraits are made on Toned Tan Paper. Rather white paper? Please let me know in the order. I use wax-based pencils which have a nice softness and are ideal for blending colors. This makes the drawing look like a painting.

Realism
One of the most important factors of portrait drawing is proportions. The eye knows instinctively when the proportions are out of whack. Therefore I spend a lot of attention to the anatomy of the person who’s portrayed.
I mix the colors carefully. This way they gradually merge into each other and pencil lines will disappear.
A portrait only comes alive when good use is made of contrast. I pay a lot of attention to drawing gradients between light and dark. Contrasts need to subtly blend into each other.
The details complete a drawing and ensure someone’s recognizability. Before I start a portrait, I analyze the characteristic details in the face.
